Senior Transportation Options in Florida: A Family Guide

For Florida families, the transportation question is rarely 'how do I get Mom to one appointment?' — it's 'how do I set up a sustainable weekly routine?' The answer usually mixes two or three programs, not just one.

NEMT (Medicaid or Medicare Advantage)

Best for medical appointments when the patient qualifies. Free at the point of service, door-to-door, driver-assisted. Not for social visits or errands.

PACE — Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly

PACE serves seniors 55+ who need nursing-home level care but want to live at home. Transportation to the PACE center and to medical appointments is built in. Florida has PACE programs in Miami, Broward, Palm Beach, Central Florida, Tampa Bay, and expanding.

Paratransit (ADA)

Every county with fixed-route public transit also runs ADA paratransit — curb-to-curb rides for people whose disability prevents them from using the bus. Fares are usually $2-$4 per trip. Booking requires an eligibility determination and 24-48 hour advance reservation.

Senior center and volunteer programs

County Councils on Aging, Area Agencies on Aging, and nonprofits like ITNAmerica run volunteer-driver programs in many Florida communities. Rides are low-cost or donation-based, but availability is thin — book weeks ahead for non-medical trips.

Rideshare (Uber Health, Lyft, GoGoGrandparent)

Best for cognitively intact, ambulatory seniors comfortable using a smartphone or a concierge service that dials for them. Not appropriate for wheelchair transport, stretcher transport, or patients with dementia who can't reliably identify the correct vehicle.
